Clouds get darker with age. White fluffy clouds are brand new and dark clouds are just very old. The older clouds do not like the cold temperatures of the upper atmosphere and so will often drop down very low (sometimes right down onto the ground), in order to find some heat. They greedily suck heat from the earth in an attempt to rejuvenate themselves and become white and fluffy again. This seldom works and they usually end their days in a mass gathering of old clouds. Clouds are aggressive and will attack if provoked, just ask any mountain climber. They sometimes ambush and even devour one another. Although, this takes a lot of energy and they soon become dark and look prematurely aged when they do this.
